Our contra dances, jointly sponsored by a student organization (the Ohio University
Traditional Dance Club) are held from 8:00 to 11:00 pm on the second Saturday of each month (with rare exceptions).    Most dances are held at the Baker University Center in the multi-purpose room on the 2nd floor.  Baker has a beautiful brand-new hardwood floor. 

Beginners are always welcome.  We encourage you to take part in the beginner's instruction period at 7:30

The cost is $7 for adults,  $3 for students, $15 for families, children 10 and under free.

Fall 2008 dance schedule 

September 8th to November 12th, 2008: "Country Dance" class; see below for details. 

September 13th, 2008: Special dance at the Paw Paw festival. 

Saturday September 27, 2008: 12:00-12:30pm:  Special event at the Richland Avenue park in Athens: We will do a demonstraction and short dance at the Art of Ohio/ACEnet festival. The festival itself is 10am-6pm and includes artists, art galleries, art organizations, community organizations and local businesses.

October 11th, 2008: Kate Power of Columbus calls to the tunes of the Stump Juice Trading Co. Held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (directions).    

November 8th, 2008: Perennial favorites Steve and Martha Ballman call to the tunes of Athens' own Boys of the Hock. Held in the Baker University Center (directions). 

December 13th, 2008: Carol Kopp of Cleveland calls to the tunes of Born Old of Elkins WV. Held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (directions).     

Fall 2008 "Country Dance" Class

 From September 8 to November 12, Mondays and Wednesdays 5:10-6pm there will be a class featuring traditional social dances from North America, Europe and other cultures, including:

  • American contras, circles, and squares
  • English and Scottish country dances
  • Irish ceilidh
  • Israeli folk dances
  • and more...
The class is held on the Ohio University campus in room E216 Grover Center (#89 on the campus map). Ohio University students are encouraged to enroll in the class officially as PED 113, call number 07715. Community members are invited to join us to learn, to teach, or both. No partner required.
